Born at Serez in Normandy on 20 February 1705 into a celebrated family of woodwind instrumentalists. Trained on the oboe and musette de cour, he entered the orchestra of the Paris Opéra and the Grand Hautbois du Roi, becoming the premier French master and teacher of the aristocratic bagpipe.
