Death Anniversary: Giovanni Battista Sammartini — January 15, 1775

He died in Milan on 15 January 1775. As maestro di cappella at Sant’Ambrogio and cathedral organist, he taught Christoph Willibald Gluck and influenced the young Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. With nearly seventy symphonies, his pioneering development of the orchestral sinfonia made him a key architect of the classical symphonic form.

A note on this date. The exact day of birth is unrecorded in Milanese parish registers (c. 1700); we celebrate his verified death anniversary on 15 January. We publish it with the warning rather than leave the page out, and if you can point us to a register or an archive that carries it we will confirm or correct it.

Dates verified on Newell Jenkins & Bathia Churgin, Thematic Catalogue of the Works of Giovanni Battista Sammartini, Harvard University Press, 1976, ISBN 978-0674877351; Treccani, DBI, vol. 90 (2017), voce "SAMMARTINI, Giovanni Battista" (https://www.treccani.it/enciclopedia/giovanni-battista-sammartini_(Dizionario-Biografico)/).
