Death Anniversary: Jan Zach — May 24, 1773
He died at Ellwangen in Swabia on 24 May 1773 after decades as a roving virtuoso, having earlier served as Kapellmeister to the Prince-Elector of Mainz from 1745. His dramatic symphonies, string sinfonias, and sacred masses display a bold contrapuntal genius and emotional unpredictability that herald the Sturm und Drang.
