He was tragically murdered outside his Paris home on 22 October 1764 in an unsolved crime. Revered as the founder of the French violin school, his four books of violin sonatas, instrumental concertos, and his opera Scylla et Glaucus synthesized French theatrical grace with Italian violin virtuosity.
