He died in Turin on 14 August 1763 after more than fifty years as leader and primo violino of the royal chapel of Savoy. As founder of the Piedmontese violin school, he trained Jean-Marie Leclair, Felice Giardini and Gaetano Pugnani, serving as the crucial technical bridge between the Italian baroque and classical European violin traditions.
