Born in Paris on 29 September 1673 into a celebrated dynasty of French woodwind instrument makers. Known as Le Romain after extended study in Italy, he entered the royal service of Louis XIV as bassoonist and flautist in the Grande Écurie, playing a central role in the technical and acoustic perfection of the transverse flute.
