Born in Lucca on 19 February 1743, in a house at the corner of the via Fillungo, the son of a double-bass player and the brother of a poet. He trained as a cellist and was one of the first composers to write chamber music in which the cello carries the melody rather than the accompaniment, above all in the quintets with two cellos.
