I lenti e cupi rintocchi delle campane di San Francesco della Vigna segnavano un tempo a mezzanotte la fine del Carnevale e l'inizio della Quaresima. Un pulpito di legna, eretto nella Piazzetta, invitava già alla penitenza e al digiuno, ma i nostri antenati, inpenitenti libertini, sordi a quei segnali e ai rintocchi lugubri delle campane, versavano lacrime amare sui tavoli dei casini da gioco, unendo il pianto per la perdita di tutte le loro sostanze all'ultimo canto in onore del caro estinto, fiduciosi però della sua vicina risurrezione e, pensando al futuro, mandavano al diavolo prediche e predicatore.
