Antonio De Curtis — Totò on stage and screen — was born in Naples on 15 February 1898. He came to San Giovanni decollato, Amleto Palermi’s 1940 comedy, with more than a decade of theatre behind him: it was one of the roles that carried his nickname, il principe della risata, the prince of laughter, from the stage onto film.
