Venice, Veneto · Memorial tablet

At a glance

At Punta della Dogana, where the Grand Canal and the Giudecca canal meet, a marble tablet is set into the stone wall. It carries the names of the men of the Veneto Guardia di Finanza killed in the First World War, under a relief of a winged figure, flanked by two bronze wreaths and two stone torches. It is signed at the lower right by Angelo Franco, a sculptor from the Venetian parish of Santa Maria del Carmelo.

Key facts

  • Sculptor: Angelo Franco (Venice, 28 July 1887 – Milan, 9 October 1961), signed on the frame at lower right
  • Commemorates: the men of the Veneto Guardia di Finanza who died in the First World War (1915–1918)
  • Form: an inscribed marble tablet with a relief above, two bronze wreaths and two stone torches
  • Location: the wall at Punta della Dogana, Dorsoduro
  • Promoted by: the Società fra ex Finanzieri di Venezia
  • Coordinates: 45.4314269, 12.3366363

What you see

The tablet is set at eye level in the white stone of the wall, in a frame of its own. The names run in close columns down the marble — enough of them that the lettering has to be small. Above, in low relief, a winged figure bends over a fallen man.

On either side hangs a bronze wreath, dark against the white stone, with a small torch beneath. The brick showing through at the base is where the wall itself has lost its facing: the memorial has been kept, the wall around it less so.

Practical information

  • Seen from the public street or canal; the building is in use and not open to visitors.

Request to use these images

Each photograph is offered by the person who took it — the seller is the photographer named on the image; Cultural Heritage Online runs the payment and delivers the file on their behalf. Buying gives you the right to use the image in your own project — a website, an article, a presentation — with the file and a written licence. Read the Terms of Sale.

What you receive. The file as it is held in our archive: the photographer's own original, without the Cultural Heritage Online watermark, unretouched and not enlarged. This is a working archive built over many years by many people, so the files differ — some were taken recently, others years ago with the equipment of their time. Older pictures are usually smaller: a camera from fifteen or twenty years ago simply recorded fewer pixels than a phone does today, so the resolution is lower and the print comes out smaller. We say so rather than hide it. The size, weight, format and year of each one are printed below it, and the print size is given at 300 dpi. Nothing is upscaled to make a number look better. Where the picture on this page has been cropped for the layout, the file you receive is the full frame, which may be wider or taller than what you see here.
