At a glance

Venice is the one city where the fire brigade goes to work by water, and this is the building that makes it possible. Begun in 1928 to a design by the Venetian architect Brenno Del Giudice, it is a block seventy-seven metres long over three floors, with its main front on calle Ca’ Foscari and, on the side facing the canal, a row of arched openings that are not windows but garages: the fire boats are moored inside the building.

Key facts

  • Begun: early 1928, on land bought for the purpose
  • Architect: Brenno Del Giudice
  • Size: about 77 metres long, three floors
  • Main front: calle Ca’ Foscari
  • On the canal side: boat garages opening onto the rio di Ca’ Foscari
  • Contractor: the Eugenio Gobbetto firm, which completed the work between 1935 and 1937
  • Inside: quarters, mess halls, a workshop and a courtyard for drill
  • Still in use: Comando Provinciale dei Vigili del Fuoco di Venezia
  • Coordinates: 45.4351769, 12.3261213

What you see

From the water the building is a long pale front with a loggia of arches at canal level — the garages, where the boats come and go. Above it the elevation is plain and symmetrical, with a shallow cornice and rows of rectangular windows: a public building of the late 1920s, restrained to the point of severity.

From the calle on the landward side the scale is easier to read. The block runs the length of the street, and the white stone base against the brick of the older houses opposite marks where the twentieth century was inserted into this corner of Dorsoduro.

Practical information

  • Seen from the public street or canal; the building is in use and not open to visitors.

Request to use these images

Each photograph is offered by the person who took it — the seller is the photographer named on the image; Cultural Heritage Online runs the payment and delivers the file on their behalf. Buying gives you the right to use the image in your own project — a website, an article, a presentation — with the file and a written licence. Read the Terms of Sale.

What you receive. The file as it is held in our archive: the photographer's own original, without the Cultural Heritage Online watermark, unretouched and not enlarged. This is a working archive built over many years by many people, so the files differ — some were taken recently, others years ago with the equipment of their time. Older pictures are usually smaller: a camera from fifteen or twenty years ago simply recorded fewer pixels than a phone does today, so the resolution is lower and the print comes out smaller. We say so rather than hide it. The size, weight, format and year of each one are printed below it, and the print size is given at 300 dpi. Nothing is upscaled to make a number look better. Where the picture on this page has been cropped for the layout, the file you receive is the full frame, which may be wider or taller than what you see here.
