Aus der Mitte Europas. Tschechische Buchkunst von 1900 bis zur Gegenwart — Klingspor Museum, Offenbach

The Klingspor Museum opened in Offenbach am Main on 7 November 1953, built by the city around the library of Karl Klingspor (1868–1950), who ran the Gebrüder Klingspor type foundry with his brother Wilhelm through the first half of the 20th century. Soon after the museum’s founding, the families of the typeface designers Rudolf Koch and Rudo Spemann gave their own collections, and the young institution quickly became a central German collecting point for modern typographic art — books, bindings, posters and type specimens from the 20th and 21st centuries.

The exhibition Aus der Mitte Europas. Tschechische Buchkunst von 1900 bis zur Gegenwart (From the Heart of Europe: Czech Book Art from 1900 to the Present) sets 17 chapters of Czech book design against the country’s artistic and political history, from typography and bookbinding to illustration and poster art. Works on show span Art Nouveau to the present, with pieces by Alfons Mucha, Karel Teige and Květa Pacovská among the artists represented.
