On 29 March 1974, farmers digging a well during a drought near Xi’an struck fragments of a clay figure buried in the ground. What they had found, without knowing it yet, was the edge of an underground army: thousands of life-sized terracotta soldiers built to guard the tomb of Qin Shi Huang, China’s first emperor, for more than two thousand years before anyone went looking.
