George III was born in London on 4 June 1738, the king whose sixty-year reign spanned the loss of the American colonies and the wars against Napoleon. In 1761 he bought Buckingham House for his wife Charlotte, a private family home a short walk from the official court at St James’s — the purchase that, rebuilt and expanded over the following century, turned into Buckingham Palace.
