The Statue of Liberty was formally dedicated in New York Harbor on 28 October 1886, before crowds gathered on the shore and boats crowding the water. France had built it as a gift marking the two nations’ alliance going back to the American Revolution; visitors who arrive by sea still see, first, exactly what the harbor saw that day.
