Frédéric Chopin died in Paris on 17 October 1849, not yet forty. He had left Warsaw at twenty and never went back, but Warsaw kept him anyway: the Fryderyk Chopin Museum, inside the rebuilt Ostrogski Palace, holds his last piano and one of the largest collections of his manuscripts and belongings anywhere. A composer who spent his adult life in exile still has, in the city he left, the fullest record of who he was.
