Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born on 2 October 1869 in Porbandar, on the coast of what is now Gujarat. The house where he was born stands inside Kirti Mandir, a memorial built by public subscription in the 1940s and completed in 1950 — a small, ordinary merchant’s house that ended up giving its name to a movement that helped end an empire.
