The feast of Saint Mark the Evangelist, patron saint of Venice, falls on 25 April. His relics reached the city on 31 January 828, smuggled out of Alexandria under a layer of pork to put off Muslim customs officers, and were received by the doge himself. The library that still stands in the square built around his name, facing the basilica raised to hold him, is as much a monument to that theft as to the books it houses.
