Saint George’s Day, 23 April, honours the patron saint of England. St George’s Chapel, inside the walls of Windsor Castle, is his spiritual home in the country he protects — built for the Order of the Garter, the oldest order of chivalry in England, founded by Edward III in 1348. Kings are buried there; the dragon-slaying knight the chapel is named for probably never set foot on the island at all.
