The feast of Our Lady of the Pillar falls on 12 October, and doubles as Spain’s national day. Tradition holds that the Virgin came to Zaragoza in the year 40 AD, while she was still living in Jerusalem — the shrine itself calls it “the Coming” rather than an apparition, since nothing had yet ended for her to appear from. The basilica raised on the spot became, across the centuries, the Marian church most identified with Spain itself.
