Fokus. Florence Henri (1893–1982) — Zentrum Paul Klee, Bern
The Zentrum Paul Klee in Bern dedicates a focused exhibition to Florence Henri, one of the modernists whose path ran straight through the Bauhaus. Born in New York in 1893, Henri lived and worked in Munich, Paris and Rome, and studied at the Bauhaus in both Weimar and Dessau, where her teachers included Paul Klee and Wassily Kandinsky — the reason her work now hangs in the museum built around Klee’s own estate.
The show brings together more than 80 works — drawings, paintings, photographs and collages — tracing her development from the paintings of the 1920s, made while she studied with Fernand Léger, through the experimental photography she is best known for, to the abstract painting she returned to from the 1940s until her death in 1982.
The exhibition is curated by Roberto Lacarbonara with Giovanni Battista Martini, director of the Florence Henri Archives, and Nina Zimmer, director of Kunstmuseum Bern – Zentrum Paul Klee.
