Mohandas K. Gandhi was assassinated on 30 January 1948 in the garden of Birla House, New Delhi, on his way to the evening prayer meeting. The house was acquired by the Indian government in 1971 and opened in 1973 as Gandhi Smriti, the national memorial that preserves the rooms of his last months and the path of his final walk. In India the anniversary is a day of remembrance for the Father of the Nation.
