The feast of Saint Agnes falls on 21 January. Tradition places the young martyr’s death in the early fourth century at the site of today’s Piazza Navona, where the church of Sant’Agnese in Agone rises over the remains of Domitian’s stadium and its crypt marks the spot. On her feast day two lambs are blessed in Rome; their wool is woven into the pallium worn by the pope and new metropolitan archbishops.
