Anniversary: The British Museum Opens — January 15, 1759

The British Museum opened its doors to visitors for the first time on 15 January 1759. Built around Sir Hans Sloane’s founding collection, it has grown into one of the great encyclopaedic museums of the world, and entry has remained free. Two and a half centuries on, the anniversary still marks the day a national collection became a public one.
