Giovanni Battista Pergolesi was born at Jesi, in the Marche, on 4 January 1710. In a life of twenty-six years he wrote the Stabat Mater and La serva padrona, works that outlived whole generations of longer careers. Jesi has kept the bond: the square that carries his name sits in the heart of the walled town where his story began.
