Anniversary: Martin Luther Excommunicated — January 3, 1521
03 January 2027
With the bull Decet Romanum Pontificem, dated 3 January 1521, Pope Leo X formally excommunicated Martin Luther. The road to that document had begun in Wittenberg, at the door of All Saints’ Church, where tradition places the posting of the ninety-five theses in 1517. The church holds Luther’s tomb to this day, and the town around it is inscribed by UNESCO as the memorial ground of the Reformation.
