History
Founded in 1291, Klenová Castle was erected as a strategic stronghold within Bohemia’s southwestern defensive perimeter. The castle’s early prestige is underscored by the birth here in 1564 of Kryštof Harant z Polžic a Bezdružic, a writer and musician of noble lineage whose intellectual contributions would later shape Renaissance culture.
Between the 17th and 18th centuries, the fortress deteriorated into ruin. Comprehensive reconstruction between 1832 and 1838 transformed it, adding new chateau buildings that honoured its strategic past while adapting it to contemporary aristocratic life.
