History
Designed by E. J. Lennox and completed in 1894, the Beard Building marked Toronto’s entry into the skyscraper age. Originally conceived as a nine-storey iron-framed structure, plans were revised to a seven-storey wood-brick design. The building was named after George T. Beard, the original landowner of the site. Its ground floor housed a branch of The Bank of Commerce, while upper floors were leased as office space. The hotel component, though part of the design, never opened due to the building’s configuration. The structure stood until its demolition in 1935, after which a gas station occupied the lot.
