A timber Lutheran church in south-eastern Finland, designed by Ernst Lohrmann and completed in 1854, standing beside a belfry from 1752. Both structures are protected as nationally significant cultural heritage.

Ruokolahti Church serves as the main church of Ruokolahti parish in the town centre. The structure combines mid-19th-century design with an earlier bell tower, creating a layered architectural record spanning more than a century of local religious life.
History
Architect Ernst Lohrmann designed the church in 1852, and construction of the timber building was completed in 1854. The belfry that stands beside it has a longer history, built in 1752 for a previous church on the same site—making it 100 years older than the current sanctuary.
In 1915, Alexandra Frosterus-Såltin created the altarpiece, a painting titled Kristus ristillä (Christ on the cross). It was her 50th and final altarpiece. The church and belfry received formal protection from the Finnish Heritage Agency as a nationally important built cultural environment.

The church is constructed of timber, a characteristic building material in 19th-century Finnish architecture. The preserved belfry from the 1750s stands as a reminder of earlier worship on this site. Inside, Frosterus-SÃ¥ltin’s 1915 altarpiece dominates the sanctuary.
Cultural significance
The church gained wider cultural prominence through art. In 1887, painter Albert Edelfelt created Ruokolahden eukkoja kirkonmäellä (Women outside the Church at Ruokolahti), now housed in the Ateneum art museum at the Finnish National Gallery in Helsinki. Finnish war hero Simo Häyhä, known as “The White Death,” is buried in the churchyard.
