A Catholic cathedral dedicated to the Transfiguration of Our Lord, completed in 1932 and elevated to cathedral status in 1936, serving as the seat of the Diocese of Kaišiadorys.

History
A construction committee was established in 1906, but the project advanced slowly. Three designs were considered before architect Wacław Michniewicz’s plan was adopted in 1914. Building commenced and the cathedral was completed in 1932. Two years later, in 1934, it became the headquarters of the diocesan curia. On 10 May 1936, Pope Pius XI elevated the church to cathedral status and sent a gift for safekeeping.
World War II brought severe damage in 1944. During Soviet occupation, the cathedral was closed to worship and repurposed. Worship resumed in 1987 following Lithuania’s independence.
What you see
The cathedral’s design was created by Polish architect Wacław Michniewicz. The building features a crypt containing the remains of Blessed Teofilius Matulionis, bishop from 1943 to 1962, interred beside his predecessor Juozapas Kukta. A statue of Matulionis stands in the square before the cathedral’s main entrance.
Cultural significance
The cathedral represents Catholic identity in Lithuania during a period of profound national and religious challenge. Its survival and restoration symbolise the endurance of faith through occupation and the restoration of religious freedom at independence.
