Overview
Force is a municipality in the Province of Ascoli Piceno, situated in the Apennine hills of Marche about 70 kilometres south of Ancona and 15 kilometres northwest of Ascoli Piceno. The archaeological park associated with the town preserves evidence of the ancient Picene population who inhabited this stretch of the central Apennines for centuries before Roman conquest. Finds from the area are among the most important sources for understanding the material culture and funerary practices of pre-Roman Marche.
History
The territory of Force has been inhabited since at least the early Iron Age, when Picene communities settled the defensible hilltops of the central Apennines and developed a distinctive burial culture characterised by rich grave goods including bronze ornaments, weapons, and fine pottery. During the 3rd century BC the area came under Roman influence following the conquest of Picenum, and the settlement gradually integrated into the Roman municipal framework. Systematic archaeological exploration of the area in the 19th and 20th centuries revealed extensive necropolis areas that have yielded artefacts now held in regional museums, while the park itself preserves in situ elements of the ancient landscape.
