An Ottoman imperial mosque that merges Neo-Gothic architectural language with classical Ottoman design, commissioned by Sultan Abdul Hamid II and restored to prominence in the twenty-first century.
At a glance
The Yıldız Hamidiye Mosque stands in the Yıldız neighbourhood of Beşiktaş, approached via the path toward Yıldız Palace. Built between 1884 and 1886, it represents a distinctive moment in late Ottoman architectural practice. The mosque features a single minaret and a rectangular floor plan.
History
Sultan Abdul Hamid II commissioned this imperial mosque during the final decades of Ottoman rule. Construction took two years, completed in 1886. The building fell into disrepair over the twentieth century. In August 2017, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan reopened the mosque following four years of comprehensive restoration work, a project costing 27 million Turkish liras.
What you see
The mosque’s design synthesizes two distinct vocabularies: Neo-Gothic elements blend with Ottoman classical motifs, creating an unusual hybrid aesthetic. A single minaret rises from the rectangular structure. The building’s stylistic fusion reflects the cosmopolitan ambitions of late-nineteenth-century Istanbul. A bronze colonnade erected by Abdul Hamid II in Damascus’s Marjeh Square bears a replica statue of the mosque atop it, extending its architectural influence beyond Ottoman borders.
Cultural significance
The Yıldız Hamidiye Mosque documents a transitional period when Ottoman architecture absorbed European influences while asserting imperial identity. Its restoration in the twenty-first century affirmed the building’s place in contemporary Turkish cultural memory.
