History
Commissioned in 1888, the church was built over four years as a memorial to Jesse Haworth, a prominent Manchester industrialist. The project was funded by members of the Haworth family, with Rev John Gorrell Haworth and Miss Nancy Haworth playing central roles. Its dedication to the manufacturing magnate remains prominently inscribed across the west façade. The churchyard preserves war graves of three soldiers and two airmen from World War II.
What you see
Lawrence Booth’s design demonstrates confident Gothic Revival principles. The church features an especially wide nave crossed by two broad transepts, each comprising two bays. Granite columns with shaft rings support the interior arcades; in places these arcades employ double rows of columns for dramatic effect. The windows follow Gothic style but, as architectural historian Pevsner observed, incorporate “un-Gothic transoms.” A fine circular font, encrusted with stiff-leaf ornament, graces the interior. The admirable southeast steeple commands views across the valley and remains a landmark visible from Bury itself.

Beyond worship, the parish operates a primary school and day nursery, reflecting deep integration with local life.
