History
Constructed in 1873 to designs by Sir George Gilbert Scott, one of Victorian Britain’s most prolific architects, the church was consecrated on 19 June of that year. The building served the local Anglican community for over a century. In 1899, the Chester architectural firm Douglas and Fordham undertook substantial restoration work, adding a vestry and organ chamber while reconfiguring the interior. Permission for conversion to domestic use was granted in January 2009, marking the end of its ecclesiastical function.
What you see
The church is a modest structure combining nave, small chancel, south porch, and a bellcote at the west end. Scott’s design employs lancet windows characteristic of Victorian Gothic Revival taste. The 1899 restoration by Douglas and Fordham introduced limestone veneer to replace internal plaster and extended the chancel into the nave, enlarging the liturgical space. Period furnishings designed by Douglas remain.
Cultural significance
The church represents Scott’s contribution to rural Welsh ecclesiastical architecture during the High Victorian period. Its architectural merit warranted Grade II listing protection in 1998. The adjoining churchyard contains burials dating to the late nineteenth century, connecting the building to local community history.
