History
Although Catholicism had an ancient presence in the area, the modern Catholic Church was absent from Godalming for over 400 years following the 1500s, during a period when the town became known for its Protestant Nonconformity. The parish of St Edmund’s was founded in 1899, with the church building itself completed in 1906. Since its establishment, Mass has been celebrated at multiple locations throughout the parish—from purpose-built churches to converted barns and halls in surrounding villages. A daughter church continues to operate at nearby Milford. The parish has long served a substantial Polish community, supported by Polish-speaking priests.

The church is constructed from local stone and described as “fine, if austere.” Designed by prolific architect Frederick Walters, it occupies a striking corner site overlooking the town. The interior reflects twentieth-century decoration campaigns and features rare bas-relief Stations of the Cross, an ornate Lady chapel, and stained glass windows by the noted firm Hardman & Co.
