Pino Pascali Foundation — Contemporary Art Museum
The Pino Pascali Foundation of Polignano a Mare houses the Pino Pascali Contemporary Art Museum, dedicated to the memory and legacy of the Italian artist Pino Pascali (1935–1968), who was born in this Adriatic coastal town in the Metropolitan City of Bari. The museum holds an important collection of works by Pascali — one of the most innovative artists of the Italian Arte Povera and neo-Dada movements — alongside a programme of contemporary exhibitions, residencies, and educational activities that have made it one of the leading institutions for contemporary art in southern Italy.

Overview
The Fondazione Pino Pascali was established in Polignano a Mare to honour one of the most inventive Italian artists of the post-war generation, who died tragically in Rome at the age of 32. Polignano a Mare is a town on the Adriatic coast of Puglia, renowned for its dramatic sea cliffs, historic centre perched above the water, and connections to figures of national cultural importance. The museum has grown from a local memorial institution into a centre of national and international significance for contemporary art, hosting the Premio Pascali prize, which since its inception has attracted major Italian and international artists.
History
Pino Pascali was born in Polignano a Mare in 1935 and studied in Naples before establishing himself in Rome’s art scene during the 1960s. His brief but prolific career — cut short by a motorcycle accident in 1968 — produced works in sculpture, installation, and performance that anticipated Arte Povera, Land Art, and Conceptual Art. The Fondazione Pino Pascali was set up in 1986, eighteen years after his death, to preserve his legacy and to build a cultural institution in his birthplace. Over subsequent decades the foundation expanded its collection and programme, becoming an anchor institution for contemporary culture in the Puglia region.
What you see
The museum occupies a historic building in Polignano a Mare adapted for the display of contemporary art, with gallery spaces presenting works by Pascali alongside rotating exhibitions by contemporary Italian and international artists. Key works in the permanent collection illustrate Pascali’s characteristic use of unconventional materials — earth, water, wire mesh, animal skins — and his irreverent questioning of the boundaries between art, nature, and play. The museum’s location in the historic centre places it within walking distance of Polignano’s famous sea-view terraces and the old town lanes that cascade down to the Adriatic cliffs.
Cultural significance
Pino Pascali is recognised as a major figure in the international history of 20th-century art, and the foundation that bears his name is one of the few Italian contemporary art institutions rooted in the Mezzogiorno with an established international profile. The annual Premio Pascali prize has served as a platform for emerging and established artists from across the world, reinforcing Polignano a Mare’s identity as a place of artistic pilgrimage alongside its well-known appeal as a coastal tourist destination. The museum embodies the potential of cultural heritage to anchor identity and attract visitors to southern Italy.
