The Church of St Thomas stands in Dudley’s town centre, known locally as ‘Top Church’ to distinguish it from the nearby St. Edmund’s. Originally dedicated to Thomas Becket shortly after his murder in the 12th century, the church’s current building dates from 1815, rebuilt after structural failure made the previous structure unsafe.
History
The church was established in the 12th century under the patronage of nearby Priory of St. James, as confirmed by a Papal Declaration of 1182 granting it to the priory. At an unrecorded point, its dedication shifted from the martyred archbishop to the Apostle St Thomas.
In 1815, the church was rebuilt under an act of parliament for £12,650 after the existing structure was declared unsafe. The rebuilding produced the Gothic Revival edifice visible today. On 7 September 1940, a Luftwaffe bomb detonated opposite the church’s front entrance during the Second World War, blowing out windows and leaving shrapnel damage still visible on the fabric.
Ecclesiastical boundaries shifted with local government reorganisation. Though Dudley transferred to Staffordshire in 1966 and later to the West Midlands in 1974, St Thomas remains in the Anglican Diocese of Worcester. The original parish was abolished in 1969 to form the combined Dudley St. Thomas & St. Luke Ecclesiastical Parish.
