History
Constructed between 1878 and 1880, the building was funded by Benjamin Nicholls as a memorial to his son. It originally functioned as an orphanage and bluecoat school, providing both care and education to vulnerable children. From 1952 to 1967, it operated as Nicholls Secondary Boys School, serving the local community through its secondary education programme. The institution subsequently became Ellen Wilkinson High School, operating under that name until a 2000 merger. Manchester College (MANCAT) acquired the site following the school’s closure, and after institutional restructuring in 2008, it became a principal campus of Manchester College.
