Overview

The Foundation is the institutional custodian of Sciascia’s papers, manuscripts, correspondence, and personal library, as well as a centre for research on his work and on the broader literary and political culture of twentieth-century Sicily. It organises conferences, publications, and educational programmes for schools and universities, and it collaborates with Italian and international cultural institutions. The Foundation sits at the heart of a literary tourism circuit in Racalmuto that traces the biographical geography of Sciascia’s life and fiction.

History

Leonardo Sciascia was born in Racalmuto on 8 January 1921 and spent his formative years in the town before establishing himself as a writer and public intellectual. His novels, including Il giorno della civetta (1961), A ciascuno il suo (1966), and Todo modo (1974), are landmarks of Italian literature exploring themes of justice, power, and the Mafia. After his death in Palermo on 20 November 1989, the Foundation was created to perpetuate his memory and manage his cultural and archival legacy. Over the following decades it became an internationally recognised point of reference for Sciascia scholarship.

What you see

Visitors to the Foundation can explore exhibition spaces dedicated to Sciascia’s life and works, including period photographs, editions of his books in multiple languages, and archival materials. The building occupies a historic structure in the centre of Racalmuto, consistent with the stone architecture typical of Agrigento province hill towns. The Foundation’s reading room and library provide a scholarly environment for researchers, while temporary exhibitions make the collection accessible to the general public.

Cultural significance

Sciascia’s work has been translated into dozens of languages and several of his novels were adapted for film, including Il giorno della civetta and Todo modo. The Foundation is therefore not only of local but of international importance as a centre of Italian literary heritage. Its presence in Racalmuto anchors the cultural economy of the town to Sciascia’s global reputation, drawing literary tourists, researchers, and school groups from across Italy and abroad.
