History
The station opened in 1874 as part of the Clifton Extension Railway, a joint project of the Great Western and Midland Railways designed to extend the rail network to Avonmouth docks. The line quickly became popular for excursion traffic, particularly day-trippers heading to nearby Bristol Zoo.
The twentieth century brought steady decline. Goods services ceased in 1965, all permanent staff were withdrawn by 1967, and the line was reduced largely to single track in 1970—leaving Clifton Down as one of the few remaining passing places. Services hit a nadir at ten trains per day each direction by 2005, but have since recovered to modern frequency.

The station retains a substantial Gothic Revival building on the Bristol-bound platform, a reminder of its Victorian importance when it employed an average of 22 staff between 1903 and 1930. A second, smaller passenger shelter faces the opposite direction, with the former goods yard beyond.
