Today it exists as part of a hybrid building—the church below, a 39-suite residential condominium above—completed in 1990.
History
The church was built in 1885 as College Street Presbyterian under founding minister Alexander Gilray (1874–1915) and his successor Robert Balmer Cochrane (1915–1925). In June 1925, the congregation voted to join the nascent United Church of Canada. The building that month hosted the 51st and final General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in Canada—a pivotal moment when the denomination’s congregations voted to merge with other Protestant bodies.
By the late twentieth century, dwindling attendance and deteriorating conditions forced difficult decisions. Rather than full demolition, the 1990 renovation preserved and renovated the bell tower while rebuilding the main structure as an eight-storey mixed-use complex.

The reimagined building respects the original’s architectural vocabulary, with the architects intentionally copying key design elements to maintain visual continuity with the 1885 church. The retained bell tower serves as a landmark and reminder of the site’s religious heritage. The new structure integrates the church at ground level with residential units above, creating an economically sustainable model for heritage preservation.
Cultural significance
College Street United Church holds particular importance in Canadian religious history. It was the venue for one of the most transformative ecclesiastical events in the nation’s past—the 1925 General Assembly that formally established the United Church of Canada through the union of Presbyterian, Methodist, Congregationalist and other Protestant denominations. The church continues its ministry under the vision of serving its community.
