History
Founded in 1825 as a chapel of ease for the overcrowded parish church in Leigh, St George’s was built to serve a rapidly expanding township. An error in the original plans produced a design too large for the available site, but additional land and donations from the community enabled completion.
The church was substantially extended at its east end during the 1880s and re-seated to improve accommodation. Two fires threatened its survival, yet the building endured. The churchyard holds graves of victims from a disaster at Yew Tree Colliery, marking the intersection of faith and industrial tragedy.
