Family Walk: Parc des Franchises (Patrimoine suisse Genève)

The parc des Franchises has just reopened after works, and Patrimoine suisse Genève marks it with a walk built for families. Maruška Moritz, a historian of gardens and landscape, leads an hour and a half on foot under the trees of what used to be a horticultural school — the first in French-speaking Switzerland, founded on this ground in 1887, before the site became a public park.

The questions the walk sets out are the kind children ask first. Where does the name “Franchises” come from? Who was the Geneva family that lived on this former country estate and received the painter Camille Corot on their land? The answers run through three centuries of planting done, each time, for the generation after. It follows the association’s family visits to Carouge and to the Bastions, and keeps the same idea: one guide, one park, and enough time to look properly.
