History
Designed by Hubert van Groenendael, the church rose between 1914 and 1916 on the Hoge Fronten, an area pocked with centuries of underground and above-ground fortifications. Named for Saint Lambert, a 7th–8th-century bishop of Maastricht and Liège, it served as a parish church for seven decades.
Subsidence cracks appeared almost immediately after completion. A 1926 restoration temporarily halted the damage, but by 1970, structural sagging and new fissures returned. In 1985, the church was finally abandoned, and the parish relocated to nearby St. Ann’s Church. Comprehensive renovation in 2010–2012 (12 million euros) stabilised the building before its 2016–2017 conversion to mixed cultural and residential use.
