Church of Saint Maurice

A landmark Gothic church in Olomouc’s city centre, distinguished by twin towers dating to the early 15th century and one of the world’s largest Baroque organs.

At a glance

The Church of Saint Maurice dominates Olomouc’s Upper Square with its imposing dual towers and triple-nave Gothic interior. Its magnificent organ, built between 1740 and 1745, ranks among the largest in the world.

History

The construction date of the church remains uncertain. The southern tower, the oldest surviving component, dates to 1403, while the northern tower was completed in 1412. The building was probably consecrated in 1492. In the 19th century, the Neo-Gothic main altar was installed in 1861. The church received official recognition as a National Cultural Landmark in 1995.

What you see

The church exhibits a three-aisled Gothic structure with characteristic arched vaults. Its most celebrated feature is the organ, constructed by organist Michael Engler with five manuals and 95 registers—a remarkable instrument of international standing. The southern tower, functioning as a lookout tower, offers panoramic views across Olomouc and the surrounding landscape.
