The cathedral was finished in 1842 as St Anne’s Parish Church, serving the local congregation for over eighty years before its elevation and rededication as St Macartin’s Cathedral in 1923. This change reflected its new status as one of two cathedral churches within the Diocese of Clogher in the Church of Ireland ecclesiastical province of Armagh.

The building’s most distinctive feature is its 150-foot tower and spire, which dominate the skyline. The tower contains a peal of ten bells capable of both ringing and playing programmed tunes. Inside, the cathedral houses a three-manual electro-pneumatic action organ with thirty-three speaking stops, full pedal board, and enclosed swell and choir divisions.

As one of two cathedrals serving the Diocese of Clogher, St Macartin’s holds pastoral and spiritual importance within the Church of Ireland. The dean and chapter of Clogher maintain stalls in this cathedral as well as at the senior cathedral in Clogher itself.
