Cockpen and Carrington Parish Church
A Scottish parish church with an unusually tall tower, designed by Richard Crichton and built by his apprentices in the early 19th century, now serving the congregation of two united parishes.

History
The current church was designed in 1816 by architect Richard Crichton. Following Crichton’s premature death, his apprentices R & R Dickson undertook construction from 1817 to 1820. The building replaced an earlier structure on the site.
In 1975, the parishes of Cockpen and Carrington were united, merging two independent congregations. The former Carrington Parish Church, built in 1711, ceased regular use and was later converted into office space. That building had previously been linked with Temple Parish Church, which has since closed.
What you see
The church’s most striking feature is its tower, which rises unexpectedly tall relative to the modest scale of the building beneath it. The proportions proved so successful that the design was adapted—enlarged—for Kilconquhar Parish Church in Fife, demonstrating the architectural respect the original commanded among contemporaries.
The building is classified as Category A listed, the highest designation in Scotland for buildings of national or international importance.

The church represents early 19th-century Scottish ecclesiastical design and the architectural vision of Richard Crichton. Its distinctive tower became a template for subsequent church building in the region, and the building remains an active place of worship and community gathering for the parish.
