History
The Slovak National Uprising erupted on 29 August 1944, representing a disciplined military campaign rather than spontaneous revolt. Led by the 1st Czechoslovak Army in Slovakia—an Allied-recognised resistance force—it drew support from the Democratic Party, Social Democrats, and Communists. The uprising sought to expel German troops occupying Slovak territory and topple the government of Jozef Tiso.
Though German forces crushed the main offensive, guerrilla combat persisted until 1945, when the Red Army, Czechoslovak Army, and Romanian Army liberated Slovak territory. The museum itself was founded in 1955, established a decade after these events concluded.
