Joseph A. Hansom, working with his son Joseph Stanislaus Hansom, designed the church and oversaw its construction between 1869 and 1871. Adrian Gilbert Scott designed this later addition. The church received Grade II* listing in 1963, advancing to Grade I status in 1989—the highest protection level for historic buildings in England.
