History
The building opened in 1836 as St Ignatius Church under the Diocese of Lancaster, making it the first church in Preston to feature a spire—a notable achievement in the town’s ecclesiastical architecture. For nearly 180 years it served the local Catholic population.
In January 2015, the church began functioning as the cathedral of the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church. Pope Francis elevated its status formally in 2016, appointing Monsignor Joseph (Benny Mathew) Srampickal as the first bishop.
